Debuting in 1969, the Chiara Floor Lamp from FLOS is an iconic piece, spreading out an alluring glow through a sculptural top hat. Designed by Mario Bellini, Chiara is a play on words, pulling from the expression ‘to shed light’ and the name of Bellini’s daughter. Bellini set out to create a piece that sends the light back into the environment with grace and intelligence. With a form follows function approach, Bellini prototyped the piece by drawing on flat materials, cutting them, and rolling them up to create a depth-filled object. The piece conceals its LED light source inside a laser-cut stainless steel wrapped plastic film. The sheet hooks onto each other, producing a cylinder and a hat diffuser that leans forward with a sense of grace. The light streams upward, glazes the inside of the hat, and reflects out into the room for an inviting, spacious glow.
