Linear Suspension Lighting for Modern Spaces

Frequently Asked Questions About Linear Suspension Lights

What is Linear Suspension Lighting?

A viable way to bring additional light to the home, linear suspension lighting, also called linear light fixtures, are single, often elongated units that bring an encompassing glow to the surrounding room. Although mainly with a rectangular silhouette, linear lighting can have elaborate designs, shapes, and styles — often the only simple, geometric part of the fixture is the rectangular mount that upholds the iconic and eye-catching design below.

How Long Should a Linear Light Be Over a Table?

As a general rule, the linear light over a dining room table should be 1/3 to 1/2 the length of the table. This distance provides a little breathing room for the table and ensures the light emitted above doesn’t overwhelm the sight of the activity below.

Linear lighting should be placed 30 inches above the table's surface. This height ensures no one is looking directly into the fixture while seated, which prevents glare and allows everyone to see each other during the activity. For ceilings more than 9 feet, add 3 inches to the height.

Adding a Linear Light Fixture in the Dining Room

Due to the long silhouette, Linear light fixtures make for excellent fixtures over a dining room table. Instead of a grand centerpiece such as a linear chandelier or a row of simpler, yet elegant pendants, a linear suspension over the table matches the direction of the table, creating a sense of flow and symmetry.

Linear Suspension Lighting in the Kitchen

Linear suspensions are also most commonly found in the kitchen. In a kitchen setting, the suspension light can be placed over a long kitchen island or a bar or counter area. Like the dining room table, hang the linear suspension at a height that will allow the illumination to cover the surface below while not creating glare for anyone’s eyes. Linear pendants are another viable option for kitchen islands and surfaces as they provide a row of matching fixtures which also create a sense of symmetry in the room.

Although linear suspensions are most commonly found in dining rooms and kitchens, they can be used in just about any room that has the space or light needed for them. In a bedroom, linear lighting can illuminate the entire bed, taking the place of a chandelier, recessed lighting, or even bedside table lamps. For hallways or living rooms, linear light fixtures can light the way between rooms and illuminate social gatherings while also acting as an eye-catching, luxury piece.
