Nelson Marshmallow Sofa by George Nelson from Herman Miller
Variations
The playful Marshmallow Sofa is a landmark of modern design that's still turning heads and making people smile. The sofa originated from the discs that are its hallmark. Designers George Nelson and Irving Harper were approached by an inventor who had created an injection plastic disc in 1956. He insisted the disc could be produced inexpensively and would be durable. So the designers took a look and arranged 18 of them on a steel frame. The inventor's cushions turned out to be impractical, but Nelson and Harper were intrigued by the design they had created so casually, and Herman Miller decided to manufacture the sofa. By joining separate elements and making them appear to float on air, Nelson and Harper achieved this sofa's unique appearance and eye-catching appeal, which led the way into the pop art style of the 1960s. The Marshmallow Sofa was reintroduced by Herman Miller in 1999 after a 34-year hiatus.
Since its beginning in 1905 as the Michigan Star Furniture Company and its 1923 re-branding marking the start of a new design era, Herman Miller has established an internationally recognized name for itself across the design industry. Boasting a wide array of pieces that range from being Mid-Century Modern iconic to being highly functional for the modern person, the company continues to remain at the top of the industry's list of notable and influential brands. While Herman Miller lighting brings a practical eye to the modern workspace, the brand doesn't lose site of what modern design should look like. While a portion of their lighting assortment is centralized on multi-functionalism wrapped in a sleek design, the brand George Nelson Bubble Lamp Collection encapsulates the timelessness of Mid-Century Modern lighting that have withstood the test of time and continue offer a modern touch to any space. Between the variation of sleek profiles for Herman Miller's table lamps to the classy designs of the bubble lamps, Herman Miller does well to cover the range of lighting tastes between sleek functionalism to modern timelessness.
