Learn More About Track Lighting

Why Track Lighting Is Important

Track lighting provides a unique way to light almost any room in your house. While might be the most popular due to its great task lighting benefits, living rooms and hallways can also benefit from adding track lighting due its great accent lighting abilities. Its flexible and adjustable nature puts it in stark contrast to the constraints of most other types of lighting while stylistically, it can add a bold statement to any room.

What are the Different Types of Track Lighting

Track lighting is a series of pendants or heads that are connected along a track that is most commonly mounted to the ceiling or wall. Whether you install pendant track lights or head track lights or a mixture of both depends on what your intention is behind the lighting. When designing a room with modern track lighting fixtures, consider if the purpose of the lighting it to illuminate a task, such as cooking, or to provide general light. Where are focused and create direct lighting that is great for tasks such as putting and chopping or accent lighting to highlight and draw attention to art or decorative details, provide a generous, general light great for ambient lighting.

How to Choose the Right Modern Track Lights

Purchasing a track lighting kit makes the installation process easier since it comes with all the lights, the track, and connectors needed, but prevents you from deeper customization. When selecting the best track lighting system for your space without starting with a kit, there are a couple key points to take into consideration:

First, choose what type of track that you want. The three main options are straight tracks, flexible tracks and curved tracks. Choosing flexible and curved tracks will mean that you will need to opt for low voltage lighting while straight tracks are powered by line voltage.

Second, confirm that the desired track head or pendant lights are compatible with the track system you are choosing. There are three track lighting standards - H, J and L - which refer to the shape of the track where the light's connector locks into. Track lighting fixtures are also labeled H, J, or L depending on which shape their connector is. The fixture needs to use the same track standard as the system.

Third, you will need to choose between line voltage or low voltage lighting for your track lights. The main advantages of low voltage fixtures are that they use less electricity, provide warmer and sharper light, and are featured more often in modern styles. On the other hand, line voltage fixtures are often more affordable than those of low voltage. Low voltage requires the added cost of a transformer to convert the standard 120 volts produced by outlets to 12 volt. Meanwhile, line voltage uses 120 volts, thus doesn't need a transformer. Line voltage fixtures are generally more affordable than low voltage, but they use more energy.
