How George Kovacs Was Founded

The man of the same name behind the brand, George Kovacs, was born in Austria in 1926 and learned the ins and outs of the lighting industry from his step-father. Kovacs struck out on his own to change the lighting industry by starting with one store in New York City in the early 1950s. In the years following, the company opened up two more stores and a lamp factory.

From the beginning George Kovacs focused on both contemporary and futuristic designs while never compromising on quality or value. Mr. Kovacs wanted each piece to provide a playful dance of light and shadow, which was a far more exciting way to light up a room as far as he was concerned. George Kovacs is a name that is so well-known today because the brand wasn’t afraid to break the mold.

The company was the first to bring halogen lamps to America in the early 1970s, following a trend that sparked in Europe. Although Mr. Kovacs sold the brand to Minka Group in 2000 and passed away in 2007, his legacy of trendsetting and innovativing lives on through every light fixture.
