Getting to Know Varaluz
Ron Henderson founded Varaluz in 2006 out of Las Vegas, and he remains the principal designer to this day. From the outset, Henderson put the planet’s health at the center of the company’s mission. From the materials used to the manufacturing practices, every impressive Varaluz design comes by way of a planet-conscious process.
A skillful team of designers and artisans work out of the company’s factory in the Philippines, taking all kinds of previously discarded items and diligently turning those materials into stylish, “lightly twisted” lighting fixtures. Varaluz relies on the artistic talents of their artisans, handcrafting pieces with great care to ensure each detail is as it should be.
The Eco-Chic Movement
All too often, eco-friendly products lean into the recycled element of their design, creating an aesthetic that doesn’t jive with many consumers. Varaluz, on the other hand, consistently proves that environmentally conscious design doesn’t have to exclude style and luxury.
With talented artisans hand working recycled goods, the team finds innovative uses from unexpected items. This opens the doors for elaborate, creative and downright beautiful fixtures made from reclaimed materials. In 2017, Varaluz turned 66.5 tons of used steel into over 20,000 stunning lighting pieces. Nearly 20 tons of recycled glass were redirected from landfills to people’s homes thanks to this company’s brilliant artistry.
Varaluz designs take inspiration from nature, using hand-applied, low to no VOC finishes that maintain a beautiful natural aesthetic. Relentless attention to detail gives each piece uncommon artistry, putting these hand-forged creations in a class of their own.
Leading by Example
The balance of tasteful design and upcycling shines through all of Varaluz’s lighting. The same trends and styles other companies present without recycled materials, Varaluz builds with salvaged supplies.
The Metropolis Vanity Light shows how renewed materials can look brand new. Featuring all the elegant geometry and modern minimalism expected from upscale design, the slender frame exhibits the careful craftsmanship needed to turn recycled steel into a statement piece.
Whereas the Metropolis presents a clean elegance, the Matrix Linear Suspension Light derives style from its unique markings and asymmetry. Uneven glass rods dangle from a sporadic steel frame, using recycled materials to create the essence of a sprawling cityscape. The light exudes classiness and charm that is unique to each hand-crafted piece of this collection.
While many companies aim to reduce, reuse and recycle, few make good on that promise with the success of Varaluz. Turning literal tons of waste into exquisite lighting fixtures, the brand has an impressive impact on both the environment and the stylish decor of its customers.
